BAND AID II
The Band Aid story turned
another chapter when 'Do They Know It's Christmas?' was re-recorded at Bob
Geldof's request by Pete Waterman, at the time one of the biggest pop producers
in the UK.
On December 3, 1988, 30
British recording artists gathered at PWL Studios in south London to donate
their time and talent to a re-record a song written by Bob Geldof (Boomtown Rats) and Midge
Ure (Ultravox) to again raise awareness and money for the relief of famine in
Ethiopia.
Four years after the original recording of the song "Do They Know It's
Christmas?" Bob Geldof was still working on the premise that he could make a
difference in the situation in Africa.
In less than 11 days, Pete Waterman, Mick Stock and Matt Aiken are able to
organize the recording with over 30 popular musicians.
This time the stars invited to participate included Bananarama, Big Fun, Bros
,Cathy Dennis, D Mob, Jason Donovan, Kevin Godley,
Glen Goldsmith, Kylie Minogue, The Pasadenas, Chris Rea, Cliff Richard, Jimmy
Somerville, Sonia, Lisa Stansfield, Technotronic,
and Wet Wet Wet.
Credited to Band Aid II, with the original recording on the B-side, the song
again reached number one and brought the 1980s to a fitting close.
The Band Aid II remake was
released on 45 and cassette tape.
It was later released on CD in two different formats. The first release had two tracks,
"Do They Know It's Christmas?" and Do They Know It's Christmas? (instrumental).
Both of these tracks were from the 1988 release.
The second had the Band Aid II remake and the original Band Aid track.
