Oz for Africa
On Friday July 12, 1985
Australia kicked of the first leg of the Live Aid concert event.
About 11,000 people paid $18.50
to hear 16 bands play at the Sydney Entertainment Centre and help the starving
of Africa.
The bands included The Angels, Men at Work, Australian Crawl, Do Re Mi, Electric
Pandas, Rene Geyer, Machinations, Mondo Rock, Dragon, Mental as Anything, INXS,
The Models, Party Girls, Goanna, Uncanny X-Men, and I'm Talking.
The event, organized by furniture retailer Bill Gordon and Brian de Courcy (a
promoter manager) in conjunction with Bob Geldof and the Band Aid Trust was
hosted by Ian (Molly) Meldrum.
Bill Gordon sold his furniture business and used the cash to underwrite the
Australian concert.
The four hour concert/ telethon was telecast on Channel 7 and 9.
Partial contributions were included in the global satellite broadcast of Live
Aid concert and appeared on abc television. Images from the event to follow.
