CONCERT AID
In May 1985 there was a remarkable coming-together of the musicians of
the BBC symphony Orchestra and
Sir George Solti - all of whom contributed their
services on behalf of Oxfam, a British voluntary organization devoted to
emergency relief. Their collaboration in London's Royal Festival Hall was called
Concert-Aid and all proceeds went to Ethiopian and Sudanese famine relief.
Inspired no doubt by the special nature of the occasion, Sir George and
the BBC Symphony players delivered a flaming performance of Beethoven's Fifth
Symphony, that unique and beloved work that celebrates the triumph of the human
spirit.
