DANCING IN THE STREET
(David Bowie & Mick Jagger)

In the summer of 1985, Jagger and David Bowie recorded a cover of Martha & the Vandellas' "Dancing in the Street" for the Live Aid organization. The single peaked at number seven on the U.S. pop charts; all the proceeds from its sale were donated to Live Aid.

Dancing In The Street
(written by Mickey Stevenson, Marvin Gaye and Ivy Jo Hunter):
Five versions of this song were released. The Bob Clearmountain 7" Mix and Instrumental on the single (EMI EA 204), the Steve Thompson Mix, the Dub Version and the Edit version released on the 12" (EMI 12 EA 204).
The song was also released on a three track cassette single (EMI 4V-19200-1/2).

The 7" mix is the only version that ever made it to an official CD (Singles Collection and Best Of Bowie). The 2'49" video clip of this song is featured on The Video Collection and the Best Of Bowie DVD; the promo shown at Live Aid did not feature the brass section that later was mixed in when the song was released as a single.

All versions (from both 7" and 12") have been released on the bootleg CD titled "Dancing In The Street".
n addition, a live version with Mick Jagger, performed at Prince's Trust concert in the Royal Albert Hall, London, on 12-06-86, is released on The Unreleased Stuff (Switch On! SO 2001-10-1) and on the Rolling Stones bootleg From Now To Then (Blue Moon BMCD28) and as a secret bonus track on the Boys Keep Singing 2CD-R.

Proceeds from the sale of these records went tot he Band Aid Trust.

Originally it was conceived that Mick Jagger and David Bowie were to do a trans-Atlantic duet; with each singer at a different stadium.
Technicians decided that due to time delays the project would not work correctly. It was decided that they would pre-record a video and it would be included as part of the concert event. Video director David Mallet and his team of 60 all gave their services for free. The Jagger-Bowie video, which took just 8 hours to make, was shot at a secret location in London. The final video was broadcast via Diamond Vision at both stadiums during the event.
